My theory for life is that everything is better with layers, this includes but is not limited to, trifles, blankets on beds, and clothes. Clearly, I’m not here to give you style or cooking advice (although my mums sherry trifle was magnificent this year), but I do want to talk about a layering approach to goal setting.
Are you setting New Year goals? If you are starting from scratch in 2022, you are already on the right mindset journey… just hang on a bit longer, during December you have been nudged into reflection and nostalgia, from adverts to family traditions, the power of nostalgia is not only that it remind of us the good times, but of who and what was present. Using this reflection technique for goal setting is the equivalent to dipping ladyfingers in sherry for a showstopping trifle, it's the base layer of the things that you did and enjoyed in 2021.
Appreciating your successes and building on what you have is important because research tells us that fresh starts are good when you need them, but they are also disruptive and stressful when you don’t. It’s especially important to take some of your 2021 highlights, the thing that you enjoyed the most with you into 2022, too often I see goals that are missing the special ingredient of enjoyment. Reflect on what made you smile, how will you do more of that ?
Psychology says that fresh starts and transition will be easier if you are able to take some of your habits and pleasures with you.
Need some accountability?
Despite great intentions, life get's in the way and we can lack the motivation and accountability to accomplish our resolutions.
Adding accountability to your goal-setting can make all the difference to the chance of your success, it works in a number of ways, but did you know that we make better choices and perform at a higher level when we know others are taking an interest in what we do?
