What an interesting set of ideas linked together here, Leila. I love the way your mind goes. I've started to notice competent women talking about their achievements in terms of luck. I always call it out. It's because you're smart, competent and have worked hard to achieve what you've smashed out of the park.

Exactly! And it does make me wonder how this changes across cultures and with the idea of modesty and holding back sometimes being a societal construct. The English are often referred to as being self depreciating and modest, though that’s very contextual and stereotypical in itself.

Of course, there is also the helping hand of privilege, and I like how I’m hearing more people attribute some of their success to privilege rather than luck.

Perhaps one thing we can all do is to validate those statements with, ‘and that took a lot of hard work’ when we hear anyone putting success down to luck.

I do adore reading your posts Leila. It’s funny that I suffer comparison in reading them as your sheer intelligence and deep-rooted desire for learning beams through and is something I both envy and admire. The ideas around metaphor and language are so interesting too, I’m already puzzled by some of the words I’m using in this reply.
